As populations continue to grow, underground construction is necessary to keep urban spaces sustainable. Tunnels serve as vital infrastructure for projects ranging from railroad and subways to utilities and pipelines. Guida Surveying, Inc. (Guida) is a multi-discipline land surveying firm that has provided surveying services throughout California since 1995. Our firm provides tunneling services which include tunnel control and construction.
CHALLENGES OF TUNNELING
Creating and managing the survey control network above and below ground requires skill and precision. Guida’s surveyors verify and coordinate with the construction crews so that significant errors do not arise.
The process of tunnel surveying often involves unique instruments not used in typical above ground surveys. Guida’s Sokkia GYRO X II instrument allows us to provide more precise and accurate directional controls and measurements above and below ground.
Our surveyors are at the forefront of measurement technology and provide unique skills essential to aid in the successful construction of any tunneling project.
PROVIDING SOUND SOLUTIONS
Using both conventional and modern survey techniques, our experienced surveyors successfully assist in tunneling projects from excavation to project completion. Our goal is to provide the most efficient and innovative methods to help reduce project costs and construction delays.
Guida offers a wide array of surveying and mapping services to the underground contracting community to help manage their projects from utility pipelines, transmission lines, to reservoirs and dams. Project tasks have included geodetic control surveys, topographic and as-built surveys, settlement monitoring, construction staking. Guida provides concise and easy to understand monitoring reports and professionally prepared redline documentation. Documents are prepared utilizing AutoCAD or MicroStation to populate Excel and PDF formats.
STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY
We utilize a blend of traditional methodologies and new and innovative technologies for the creation and delivery of the most accurate work products possible to our clients. Our field teams are equipped with a Trimble field to finish data collectors that allows us to work efficiently.
Our objective is to stay current with the latest technology available to the industry to help mitigate risks through the lifecycle of a project. Guida’s Sokkia GYRO X II enables our survey team to maintain a high level of accuracy and confidence above the standard survey equipment used by other firms.
PHASES OF TUNNELING PROJECTS
The physical characteristics of tunnels make the surveying process somewhat different from conventional surveying. Most tunneling projects include basic procedures for investigation, excavation and materials transport, ground support, and environmental control.
AVERTING POTENTIAL SEWAGE SPILLS IN LOS ANGELES
Currently, Guida is supporting the construction of the Venice Dual Force Main Sewer Pipeline project in the City of Los Angeles. Due to rising population in the area, the City realized a critical need to manage increased capacity on the City’s sewage system. The existing 60-year-old 48-inch force main could potentially overflow or fail. The project consisted of construction of a new 2-mile, 54-inch diameter force main sewer operating parallel to the existing force main. Guida is providing directional controls for the tunnel boring machine and performing quality assurance surveys during the tunnel construction.
EXPERIENCE THAT COUNTS
Guida’s team members have worked with public and private agencies across California to provide highly technical land surveying services on some of the state’s most significant resource projects.
